Before college I knew that I wanted to go into the medical field. Being able to engage in an environment that fosters curiosity and exploration has been a privilege. Together as a research team we strive under conditions where we all desire to create an enduring impact on others’ lives. After conducting research for two years as an undergraduate, I saw the long-lasting impact that research has on many people all at once. To consolidate both my passions, I will be soon undergoing the application process to enroll in a MD-PhD/ Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP).

I originally was interested in internships and was curious about how to go about researching the subjects that I found fascinating. After getting advice from a faculty member (Dr. Prosen) I pursed Dr. Coleman. I have always loved Dr. Coleman’s philosophies and teaching style. In general I am interested in sound frequency, & vibration and how they influence biological factors; One of Dr.Coleman research projects involves how noise pollution impacts stem cell differentiation.
The main skills that we learn in the lab are techniques that can be used universally throughout most labs. Some of these skills include searching for proper Research articles/material, Cell splitting, Western Blot, Changing, Media, developing Aseptic technique, Autoclaving, and more. The other main skill that we learn in the lab is how to think efficiently.
By working in the research lab I have realized that there are so many opportunities after graduation especially when you gain experience beforehand. At the moment I have three ideas about what I want to pursue with my degree. The first is to apply to a pediatric program. Second I could pursue a lab that is working on projects that I find stimulating. The last thing I have considered is trying save funds to rent a space and open up my own version of a wellness center. In the future these ideas may change however, without the experience I am getting in the research lab during my undergrad these options would be limited or inaccessible

Reason for joining research: I was drawn to the benefits and advantages of research through the charismatic personality of Dr. Coleman whos vast knowledge will always leave you impressed and inspired. I joined Dr. Coleman's research lab to take advantage of its many avenues for self-improvement such as learning valuable analytical skills, mastering the usage of advanced lab techniques, the addition of countless hours of experience and improving your overall sellability on the job market post-graduation, to name a few.
How has research impacted me: Research has taught me essential observatory and multi-tasking skills, which will prove beneficial in my future regardless of my future profession. The lab has also shown me the ability to maintain my composure while working in stressful environments, that require maximum concentration.
Post-graduation plans: Upon graduating from New Jersey City University, my goal is to attend medical school to obtain my medical Doctorate and become a Pediatrician

Less than a year ago, I was working at life science consulting company as a research assistant. I learned so much about the oncology market and what goes on after a drug passes all the clinical trials. But sitting through survey phone calls with oncology specialists from top institutions around the country validated what I always I knew. I wanted to be on the other side of these phone calls. I wanted to be on the clinical side, doing research and interacting with patients. It inspired me to go back to school. I enrolled at NJCU to obtain a bachelor in biology in preparation for a career in medicine. Through networking, I found out about the research club and I met Dr. Natalia Coleman. Research as an undergraduate student at NJCU has been an opportunity to learn a plethora of translational skills that will be useful for me inside and outside laboratory. Not only am I learning how to maneuver around a lab and about different techniques, but I also have the mentorship of Dr. Coleman.
